is this you?

An evaluation is worth your time if you have…

Clicking or popping of the jaw

Stiffness or locking of the jaw

Headaches or migraines

General facial or shoulder pain

Grinding or clenching at night (bruxism)

A bite that feels off

TMJ is rarely one problem. That is why the first step is a real evaluation.

A dentist who plans for decades, not visits.

Most people who walk in with TMJ pain have been told it's stress, or to wear a night guard. Sometimes that helps — and sometimes we need to look deeper. That's what the diagnostic visit is for.

How we evaluate TMJ at Artistry in Dentistry

Aesthetics

How the jaw sits and how the face is balanced.

Functional

How the joints, muscles, and bite work together — or fight each other.

Structure

The teeth and existing dental work under load.

Biology

The joint itself, the muscle, and any inflammation feeding the pain.

diagnostics & treatment

Look inside the joint first.

We use a CT scanner to look inside the jaw joints and surrounding muscles for the source of your symptoms.

For most patients, the first step is a custom bite guard: a mouthguard worn at night that gently adjusts the jaw so only the front teeth touch — preventing your back teeth from clenching and reducing the stress on the TMJ itself.

what to expect

How a TMJ case is worked.

1

Diagnostic consult

60 minutes with Dr. Sullivan. We map your pain and take a CT scan of the jaw joints.

2

A custom bite guard, if it is the right first step

For most patients this is where we start. It is worn at night and made specifically for your bite.

3

Follow-up and adjustment

We check in with you after wear to make sure the fit and the relief are what we planned for.

investment

How patients pay for this care.

Artistry in Dentistry is fee-for-service and out-of-network with every PPO. We submit to insurance as a courtesy but do not participate in any plan — that is how we protect the standard of care we are willing to sign our name to. Most patients use one or more of: our in-house Clerri Membership, third-party financing through CareCredit, Proceed, or iCreditWorks, or a phased treatment plan spread over time.

one more thing

Nervous about calling?

The hardest part is picking up the phone. Just call — we take it from there.

good questions

TMJ / TMD FAQ

How do you diagnose TMJ?

We use a CT scanner to look at the jaw joints and surrounding muscles, alongside a full evaluation of your bite and symptoms.

Will a bite guard fix it?

For most patients, a well-made custom bite guard is the right first step. It's not always the whole answer — that's what the diagnostic visit is for.

Do you treat hemifacial spasm?

We do evaluate patients with hemifacial spasm in Gilbert whose symptoms overlap with TMJ, bruxism, or occlusal muscle dysfunction. Therapeutic Botox in the masseter and temporalis is often part of the treatment plan; complex cases are co-managed with a neurologist.

Do you do surgery?

No. We diagnose and treat TMJ non-surgically. If a surgical opinion is ever needed, we help you find a trusted specialist.

How long does it take to feel relief?

It varies. Many patients feel a difference within a few weeks of wearing the appliance nightly.

Is this covered by insurance?

We are out-of-network with every PPO and submit as a courtesy.

Can you treat this if I already have a lot of dental work?

Yes. In fact, that's often when TMJ becomes urgent — a jaw that's out of alignment tends to accelerate wear on existing work.
