before we get to sedation

A judgement-free office, first.

For many patients, our welcoming environment and personable team are enough to get through routine and even longer visits comfortably. Sedation is the next step when comfort alone isn't the right fit.

is this you?

Sedation might be right for you if you…

Have avoided the dentist for years because of anxiety

Have a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting through a visit

Need multiple procedures and would rather combine visits

Have a hard time sitting through long appointments

Have had a traumatic dental experience in the past

Want to be sedated for a longer or more complex treatment

Sedation isn't for every visit. It is a real option when it's the right one.

A dentist who plans for decades, not visits.

Sedation isn't about avoidance. It's about making the care possible for the patient in front of me — the ones who otherwise would keep putting it off, or would need multiple visits for what we can do safely in one.

sedation options

Three levels, one standard of monitoring.

Oral Conscious Sedation

A prescription pill taken before your appointment. Once it takes effect, it relaxes your body in a similar way to laughing gas, easing you through the visit. You'll need someone to drive you home.

IV Sedation

Medication delivered directly through an IV for rapid onset and precise control. Many patients remain in a deeply relaxed state with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. Provided on-site by Lifeguard Anesthesia.

General Anesthesia

The deepest level of sedation available — a controlled, temporary state of unconsciousness with full airway support and monitoring. Ideal for high anxiety, special healthcare needs, or longer complex procedures. Administered on-site by board-certified nurse anesthesiologists from Lifeguard Anesthesia.

what to expect

Before, during, and after.

1

Medical review

We review your health history, medications, and any prior sedation experience. Some patients need clearance from their physician first — we help make that easy.

2

The visit itself

You are monitored the entire time. Nothing gets rushed.

3

After the visit

You go home with a plan for the day, contact information, and a clear picture of what is next.

How patients pay for this care.

Artistry in Dentistry is fee-for-service and out-of-network with every PPO. We submit to insurance as a courtesy but do not participate in any plan — that is how we protect the standard of care we are willing to sign our name to. Most patients use one or more of: our in-house Clerri Membership, third-party financing through CareCredit, Proceed, or iCreditWorks, or a phased treatment plan spread over time. Sedation and anesthesia are billed in addition to the treatment itself. We give you the full number in writing before we schedule.

I had a major procedure and was very nervous. They took control to make sure I was comfortable and informed throughout it. I highly recommend Dr. Sullivan and his team for all things dental!

Sedation dentistry FAQ

What types of dental procedures can be performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia?

A range — fillings, crowns, extractions, implants, and complex or lengthy treatments where sedation makes the visit safer and more comfortable.

Who administers the anesthesia?

IV sedation and general anesthesia are provided by board-certified nurse anesthesiologists from Lifeguard Anesthesia, working alongside our team in our office.

What types of sedation are available?

Oral conscious sedation, IV sedation (twilight sleep), deep sedation, and full general anesthesia. The right option depends on your procedure, health history, and personal preference.

How is general anesthesia different from IV sedation?

IV sedation places you in a deeply relaxed but conscious state — you'll likely feel drowsy and may not remember the procedure. General anesthesia puts you completely to sleep and requires more monitoring and airway support.

Is general anesthesia safe in a dental office setting?

Yes. Lifeguard Anesthesia specializes in mobile anesthesia for dental practices, uses hospital-grade equipment, and is trained in emergency management. Their protocols meet or exceed state safety guidelines.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

You'll receive instructions in advance that may include fasting for several hours, adjusting certain medications, and arranging for a driver to bring you home.

Is sedation safe for people with medical conditions?

In most cases, yes. Common conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure can be safely managed. If needed, we consult with your primary care provider first.

I'm scared. Where do I start?

Call the office and just say that. We do this every day.
